Flying in Extreme Heat
Extreme Heat and Light Aviation: Essential Precautions from the French Aero Federation (FFA)
With the increase in summer temperatures, heat and humidity become major risk factors for pilots and passengers. In response to these thermal hazards, the French Aero Federation (FFA) has published clear guidelines to anticipate potential dangers in light and sport aviation.

Enter the air temperature and relative humidity to compute the danger level. If the humidity is unknown, you can enter the dew point instead to automatically determine the relative humidity.
Based on a risk diagram similar to that used by the Air and Space Force, but specifically adapted to the realities of light aviation, the FFA identifies four levels of vigilance, each accompanied by specific operational instructions:
🔴 High-Risk Zone: The risk of heatstroke is critical. The aircraft must be parked in a sheltered location. Ground activities should be minimized. If a flight ends in a red zone, no other activity is permitted within 24 hours. Intensive hydration and complete avoidance of prior physical exertion are mandatory.
🟠 Significant Risk Zone: The risk persists. The aircraft should remain in the shade; flights are limited to two every 24 hours with a required rest period between them. Moderate physical activity is only acceptable after a four-hour rest period before the flight. Hydration must be maintained before, during, and after the flight.
🟡 Possible Risk Zone: Heatstroke remains unusual but depends on factors such as age, physique, physical condition, and any potential medical conditions. Ventilation of the cabin is recommended; multiple flights are possible provided there is sufficient rest, and water should be plentiful in flight.
🟢 Low-Risk Zone: No specific precautions are required.
In addition to the diagram, the FFA advises cross-referencing these indications with the extreme heat vigilance levels issued by Météo-France. The original document from the FFA Prevention & Safety Commission can be downloaded via this link .
